It’s really important to be able to trust and rely on your doctor!

Hello, my name is Laurent,

In 2009 I was diagnosed with acute leukemia at the age of 23. I received 4 chemotherapy treatments, but unfortunately my leukemia recurred in 2010, so I needed to receive a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. In preparation for this transplant, I received three additional chemotherapy treatments and a total body irradiation. It was my last chance. The transplant was successful. But unfortunately, two years later, in 2012, I missed luck again: I developed a Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD). Today, all of my skin is affected, as well as my eyes and my liver. My skin is the most affected, it has become very hard since it gives me nerve pains and difficulties to walk. Now I have to move in a wheelchair. But we are almost in 2018 and I am still alive! And it’s only thanks to my transplant (and thanks to the donor and the doctors who accompanied me). In particular, I wish to thank Dr. Schoemans for always listening to me since the beginning of my disease. It’s really important to be able to trust and rely on your doctor!
